FAQs
What is Virtus and how does it relate to NSW sport eligibility?
Virtus is the worldwide federation for elite sport for athletes with an intellectual impairment. Its standards underpin NSW sport eligibility, which is issued in Australia by Sport Inclusion Australia (via Sports 4 All in NSW).
Which class — II-1, II-2 or II-3 — affects my NSW sport eligibility?
II-1: Intellectual disability (IQ ≤ 75, adaptive limits, onset < 22).
II-2: Intellectual disability plus a significant additional impairment such as Down syndrome.
II-3: Autism spectrum diagnosis (no ID) with functional impact.
Sports 4 All confirms your correct class before lodging your NSW sport eligibility application.
What documents do I need for my NSW sport eligibility application?
You’ll need a psychologist’s report with IQ score, an adaptive behaviour assessment, proof the impairment began before age 22, photo ID, a recent passport-style photo and, for II-2, a genetic test or doctor’s letter.
How long does the NSW sport eligibility process take?
Once Sports 4 All submits your paperwork to Sport Inclusion Australia, your NSW sport eligibility card is usually issued within 4–6 weeks if everything is complete.
Does NSW sport eligibility guarantee Paralympic entry?
Not by itself. Only athletics, swimming and table tennis currently have Paralympic events for intellectual disability (II-1). Your NSW sport eligibility card is the first prerequisite, followed by meeting each sport’s performance standards.
What if my sport isn’t in the Paralympics?
Virtus runs world championships and the Global Games for many sports outside the Paralympics. Your NSW sport eligibility still unlocks state and national events run by your SSO.
Is there a fee for NSW sport eligibility?
Yes. Sport Inclusion Australia charges a one-off processing fee. Sports 4 All invoices you once your application is accepted.
