We oversee State and National eligibility selection process, ensuring that athletes with intellectual disabilities can participate in their chosen sports category.

Eligibility and Classification

Level 1
Provisional International Eligibility – allowing participation in Developmental Events.

Level 2
Full Primary Eligibility – granting access to Virtus Regional, World Championships, and Global Games.

Level 3
Sport Specific Classification – required for participation in Paralympic Sports. It’s important to note that Level 3 is managed by the specific sport’s federation.

Understanding the core criteria

  1. Significant impairment in intellectual functioning, equating to a score of 75 or lower on the Full Scale score, which is 2 standard deviations below the mean.
  2. Significant limitations in adaptive behaviour, involving conceptual, social, or practical skills, with performance at least 2 standard deviations below the mean in any of these areas.
  3. Intellectual disability must be evident during the developmental period, spanning from conception to 18 years of age.

To be eligible for participation in intellectual disability sports, athletes must meet all three elements of these criteria.
